Although competition and community service are two very important aspects of RHS FBLA/DECA, we also pride ourselves in the activities and fun events that we hold for our members! Large group events are ways for us to bond and get to know who is included in our big FBLA/DECA family here at Rhinelander High School.
SleddingComing from a small town in Northern Wisconsin, our DECA chapter strives to have events that also aren't of any charge for our members. On January 23, 2017, eight DECA members went to Saroka Park in downtown Rhinelander for a couple hours of sledding on the large hill. With beautiful weather and plenty of sleds, the members had a great afternoon bonding over such a light-hearted, fun event.

Mall of America
The Mall of America's unique combination of business and fun sparked an interest in around 50 FBLA/DECA members in mid-October of 2017. We began the day with a business presentation by a Mall of America representative who specializes in marketing and public relations. She explained the interesting history of the mall and focused on the innovative ideas that can only be seen at the Mall of America. For example, did you know that the Mall claims to be the first in the world to mix retail and entertainment? For the rest of the trip, students were allowed to see these marketing strategies in action as they got to shop at over 520 stores, ride the attractions featured in Nickelodeon Universe, and satisfy their appetites with the choice of hundreds of delicious restaurants within the mall.

FBLA/DECA Spirit WeekFBLA/DECA hosted a spirit week within Rhinelander High School to promote our organization and recruit members for next year. Each day of the week, there are unique dress up themes for students and staff to participate in; Monday, Comfy Day; Tuesday, Tye-Dye Tuesday; Wednesday, Backwards Day; Thursday, Tourist Day; and Friday, FBLA/DECA Shirt or for non-members, School Spirit Day. We also ran a DECA Diamond Hunt throughout the week, and the student who found the hidden “diamond” around the school was awarded a prize. On Tuesday, thanks to Dunkin’ Donuts of Rhinelander, our organization was able to provide a complimentary staff appreciation breakfast and give back to our educators. On Wednesday of FBLA/DECA week, our members were encouraged to bring a friend along to our annual ice cream social, with generous donations from Culver’s of Rhinelander. Perhaps the most heartwarming part of the week, however, came on Thursday, when our high school came together and raised over $300 in 60 seconds for the Oneida County Animal Shelter, a local charity that helps animals in need in the Rhinelander area.

Halloween Movie Night
Big field trips are always a fun aspect of FBLA/DECA, but we realize that not all of our members can afford to go to a Brewers game or the Mall of America. On Friday, October 30th, we invited all of our members to a movie night at the high school. To ensure that the event was appealing to all our members, we showed two movies: a horror film in the auditorium, and a family-friendly Halloween themed movie in a classroom. Everyone who attended had a ton of fun! This event was a great way for our organization to allow our members to bond and connect with each other before competition started. |
Six Flags Great America
39 students went to Six Flags: Great America on May 8, 2016. Six Flags is a theme park in the Greater Chicago area with a variety of attractions from American Eagle--the world’s tallest and fastest wooden roller coaster, to Superman--where one can (almost) fly. The trip is an end of the year celebration and after competing in FBLA and DECA Regionals, State, and for some, Internationals, many students were excited to take the one-day trip to Chicago. To attract more members for next year, the chapter opened the event to non-member underclassmen. For them to attend, they had to pay chapter dues for the following year, so the chapter already has members signed up for the 2016-2017 school year.

Brewers Game
The first FBLA/DECA trip in the 2015-16 school year was a Brewer’s Game in Milwaukee. Although the 12 members didn’t get to see the Brewers beat the Cubs (Cubs won 9-5), the group did get to see how the Brewers market themselves. From all of the ads across the stadium, stores in the corridors that circle the stadium selling brats and merchandise, and the Scooter Genet Lawn Gnome given away to everybody in the stadium that is an easily comprehensible brand mark; the Brewers really excel at promoting themselves. It may have been a small group, but they had a great time and were able to experience business outside of the classroom in an exciting and memorable way.
Conference Events
Sports and Entertainment Marketing Conference (SEM)
Two core DECA clusters are entrepreneurship and marketing. That’s why the State Officer team choose the Alliant Energy Center in Madison to host the Sports and Entertainment Marketing conference. Rhinelander brought three of its own officers and one member to Madison on December 12th, 2015. Over 400 students across the state attended such events as listening to a New York comedian giving a presentation about how he became a stand-up comic; after hearing that he originally came from Indianapolis, it was hilarious to hear that the comedian’s name is Tom Brady. Later in the day, the participants learned and worked with Capitols marketers about how they advertise each game, and how they were founded only a year ago. The presentations were all very informative, and it was beneficial to see how everything that attendees learned throughout the day culminated at the actual game in the evening against Dubuque. This was the first time Rhinelander took students to a Sports and Entertainment Marketing event and we will discuss next year if we will bring the entire Rhinelander FBLA/DECA chapter.

Emerging Leaders Conference (ELC)
In the business world the most important skill to have is networking. ELC creates a great environment for DECA members across the state to work together and network with other chapters. We open this up to our officer team so that they get to attend educational programming to help them better lead the chapter! They also get to hear from many speakers and learn new problem solving skills.
